Working Principle of ASME Rising Stem Flanged Gate Valve
When the operator turns the handwheel, the handwheel drives the valve stem to rotate. The trapezoidal thread at the upper end of the valve stem engages with the valve stem nut, converting the rotational motion into axial linear motion. Since the valve stem and gate are connected, the valve stem will drive the gate to rise or fall together.
To open the valve, turn the handwheel counterclockwise. The valve stem drives the gate to move upward in a linear motion, causing the gate to disengage from the valve seat. When the gate is raised to a height equal to twice the valve's nominal diameter, the fluid passage is completely unobstructed, and the valve is in the fully open position. During operation, the handwheel is typically turned to the position where it cannot be turned any further, and then turned back half a turn to one turn to achieve the fully open position, preventing the valve stem from locking due to temperature changes.
To close the valve, turn the handwheel clockwise. The valve stem drives the gate to move downward in a linear motion, causing the gate to press against the valve seat. The torque applied by the handwheel generates a forced sealing force, and the pressure of the medium in the pipeline also presses the gate against the other valve seat, forming a self-sealing effect. This dual action ensures zero leakage when closed.
The core characteristic of a rising stem gate valve is that the valve stem rises and falls synchronously with the gate. Operators can visually determine the valve's open/closed state by observing the length of the valve stem extending beyond the valve cover—the longer the stem extends, the wider the valve is open; when the stem is fully retracted, the valve is closed.
It is particularly important to note that ASME (American Standard) rising stem flange gate valves can only be used in fully open or fully closed positions and cannot be used as control valves. If left in a partially open position for an extended period, the high-speed flowing medium will erode the sealing surfaces, causing wear on the gate and seat, ultimately leading to valve leakage. Furthermore, the medium can flow in from either side of the gate valve in either direction, eliminating the need to consider flow direction during installation and facilitating site layout.
